Hey Im new to MFK and I had a question about updating my filtration. Right now my tank is 60 gallons and is drilled and connected to a sump good for 90 gallons. I got the whole setup for free on craigslist. In the tank I have a medium Oscar A chocolate Pleco and a few JDs (JDs are there temporarily). The water is clean and clear, but I still want to get a canister filter (xp2 or xp3, Im scared the xp3 will have too much flow for the tank). Also my tank is in a sunny room so I was wondering if a UV sterilizer would be more useful instead of a canister.
Thanks
Kamil

not sure you need a canister if you are already using a sump. what is in the sump right now? bio balls I am assuming?

Sounds to me that if you've got a 60g with a 90g sump you should be able to hook up more than enough filtration for anything you'd keep in the tank with your sump. Just fill that sucker up with media and you're set.

heck I would reverse the 2 tanks. 90g as the DT and 60g as the sump
:D

The sump holds about 10-15 gallons of water and is store bought not diy, the manifacturer said that it filters up to 90 gallon tanks. The water from the tank falls on filter floss, then ammo chips, then carbon. After all that it falls onto a bio wheel and flows into a resivoir with the pump, heater and some sponges and a small amount of ceramic bio mass. I might just consider adding a filter sock
Thanks

Well, I am not overly familiar with that type of sump, but if you can try to replace the ammo chips and carbon with bio media like bio balls, bio rings, or something. A well established tank shouldn't need ammo chips and carbon really isn't necessary either.

I think the sump is all you need. But if it will make you feel better than add another filter. It will not hurt anything.

I need some more water movement anyway haha and I fould an xp2 for 40 dollars used... Im going to pick it up in a couple days
