I currently have a 10" florida gar
2 x Frontosa (1 is about 2 inch, the other 6)
1 x Ornate Bichir around 10"

My LFS has a green arowana for sale, looks awesome. It is around 4 inches long so I don't think size compatibility would be an issue. The gar doesn't bother anything unless he plans to eat it.

I have a 120 gallon tank 4x2x2. Would it be a bad idea to add the Aro to my tank and how many years would it take before I need to upgrade to a larger tank (I plan to upgrade in a couple years for the gar already) ?

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me. I really want to add the arowana to my tank, but don't want to make an impulse buy I will regret.

no i wouldnt get rid of the gar and you will need to upgrade within the year

arowana grow kinda quick when they are young. but that being said, my Pinky (silver aro), that is currently nearly 30" was in a 2' x 4' tank for a couple years, then we moved her to a 6' long tank after she got to be about 15". i won't say it was more than 2 years, but i know it wasn't much less than 2 years.

tank will only last you a yr. i have a 10 inch xback in my 120 gal. looking to upgrade that in a yr. otherwise, they will get gill curl if the tank is too small. you see green aros at fraser? if you have the extra cash, get a red tail gold aro. you will be more satisfied when hes older. greens are ok but honestly, not worth keeping long term since the price for rtgs are super low now in vancouver. order from dragonfish.ca (theo) or jay from arovillage.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I will probably not get it, sounds like they grow to fast for my budget right now. I just finished my BCIT program and need to find work so I can't afford the tank upgrade right now or a gold aro. They are definitely awesome looking fish though.

Why wouldn't you get rid of the gar? Mixing a 4" aro with a 10" sounds like bad newsto me.

I don't think your 4x2x2 dimension tank can accommodate so many fish that you have + the green aro you planning to buy.. unless you are planning to upgrade in a year..
I've kept green aro with florida gar + bichir + giant snakehead in that same tank dimension as well but had to remove them within 6 months or so.. they just grow too fast especially the green & snakehead..
You really won't wanna make an impulse buy & regret later on by letting go of your fish.. trust me, that feeling will come back to haunt you everytime you see a similar fish.. lol

If you do plan on getting green aro from Fraser Aquatics it's best to get them from Arrovilage (Ask Jay for appointment during the weekdays or go during the weekend as they are open) or Dragonfish.ca (Join theo in the group order). They are both cheaper at Arrovillage or Dragonfish.ca as they cost somewhere around $200 or lower price as Fraser Aquatic sells them for $500 or higher which is the same price for a RTG if you plan to get from Arrovilage or Dragonfish.ca

I would have gotten it from a place called Rogers Aquatics on scott road. Thanks for all the replies, I have decided not to get it. Getting rid of any of my current fish was never an option and I won't be able to upgrade for about two years or so.
