About ten years ago I came upon a used 6 foot, 135 gallon tank that had been drilled for external filters. There was a compartment in the tank and some bio balls were in there. The external filter it came with had issues so could not use, but I had a couple of AC 110s so I capped the ends of the tank and used the hang- on- back style with success. Did not put anything in the bio ball compartment as there was no circulation there.

At present I have no fish in the tank so am doing a thorough cleaning and am wondering about picking up an external filter and maybe could run with that and one or two AquaClears.

I include pictures and a couple of questions. Is the pipe on top left a return from the canister and the pipe on the bottom right coming out from the bio ball chamber where the flow into the canister would be? That is how I see it; just want to be sure.

Second question what brand/model of filter would you suggest? Maybe I can get get a deal Boxing Day in Canada. Years back I had classic Eheim 2217 but to be honest, I had trouble with priming a whole lot and did not like. Or maybe I should just stick to the current set up. It seems to be working well with the AquaClears. I mainly keep African cichlids.DSC_9825.JPG

Yes, that connection at the bottom does connect to the chamber.

I don't know what that chamber would be called, but there were literally bio balls in there when I got it.

Would you agree that connection is where the flow out to the canister would have been?

Does the chamber, overflow or weir, whichever term you want to use, only have slots at the top? If so I would not use it for the intake to a canister filter as there probably would not be enough water available to the canister filter and you'll have problems.

Yes, holes at the top. Even though that chamber was not being used, you can see from the calcium I was keeping the tank pretty full anyways.

So nothing would go in that chamber? What purpose did it originally serve?
