If it wont interfere with your sump operating fully then yes but the sponges are great surface areas also imo.

Keep the sponges, add the rings under to bio balls and in the other spaces you have

so should I throw the rings in A cloth bag or just loose and if so how much of that area should I fill up with the rings.
And just to clarify you mean I should have them fully submerged correct

Purchase media bags at lfs or order online. This will make them easier to deal when you do maintenance.

Are there good quality and poor quality rings.
There are a lot on ebay I was looking at one that was 6lbs in 5 media bags for 11.71

I bought some of those, they are pretty decent with good quality bags
