I know geo types do better in groups. I currently have 4, is that fine or would I be better off with 6 or so?

Depends on tank size and stock. I would add 2 more if the tank permits because it could give you greater sexual diversity and social behavior.

It's a 170G and the stock is in my sig (though the cigar shark and possibly the JD will be rehomed eventually). Mine came from Guyana, ideally I'll be able to find some more from there if possible.

In 170 your fine adding two+ more. It's up to you though. Four is fine but they are a great species and keeping a larger group would be a pleasure IMO. :D

I think I'll go ahead and get 2-3 more, and maybe move out one of my severums and add a few more festivums also (my 2 chase each other constantly).

Are you sure they are S. jurupari? I don't have the newer eartheater book, but if I remember right S. leucosticta replaces S. jurupari in Guyana (and S. leucosticta are usually sold as jurupari).

edit: PS, I would add a couple more. It seems Satanoperca are rarely found in groups less than 5 in nature unless it's a breeding pair.

leucosticta is the fish that has been sold as jurupari for decades.
leucosticta have the blue/green spangles, jurupari dont.

They're the ones that snookn21 brings in. I may be wrong about Guyana, the ones he's selling now are from Guyana and look like S. leucosticta. Pretty sure mine are S. jurupari and may actually be from Peru, I will try to put a pic up. They don't have the leuco spangling.

Edit: Found the old thread in buy & sell, jurupari from Peru. I may indeed have a hard time finding some since it's true, what's usually for sale are S. leucosticta.

Well, lately (at least around here) true jurupari have been much more common than the leucostictas for at least the last two years or so. Odd. Peru is good though, lots of imports so you should be able to match them up.
