I'm looking at getting a 200 gallon tank for the house i'm moving into, ut its occured to me, i haven't checked what's under the floor where i plan to place the tank, the house is reasonably modern and the tank would be going on the ground floor... How unlikely is it that the floor will need reinforcement of any kind?

Not sure what regulations they have overseas but I would check to see how many joices run across the floor where you plan on putting your tank. Along with how thick your joices are.

As long as buildings in the UK are built to similar codes as in the US you are fine IMO

This website forum has many post by fish owners who have some very big tanks...YET I have not seen any topics about an aquarium being so big that it sagged the floor...

This seems to tell us that the problem of a fish tank being too heavy for the floor to hold up just does not happen to any of us.

I have yet to see a YouTube video of a normal fish tank that was upstairs ended up in the basement because of the weight of the water.....

Infact, you dont see that many reports of DIY tank stands being the cause of a tank crashing to the floor, and thats way more likely to happen.

Yuh, that's what my thoughts were, i struggle to see how it can cause any damage at all on the ground floor. I'm going to be making a stand out for it at some point with my girlfriends dad who is a welder and construction engineer so should be fairly sturdy i'm hoping.

There have been a lot of threads on this subject, the general concensus seems to be that there is no need to worry until you get into the 300 gallon + range.

Like Kumdoalan said, I have yet to see a thread about a tank that has crashed through a floor. The biggest worry (in my opinion) is that the floor will sag and cause the tank to crack or pop a seam. A really solid stand will help prevent this.

I'm putting up a 220 gal tank. I was going to put on the first floor, but then I did the math. My 220 gal tank complete and filled will weigh about 2200lbs. I would have had to double all of the flor joists, which are already 18" on center. Instead I'm putting it in the basement which has a concrete floor and don't have to worry about the weight.
