Here's the deal. The pH of my 10g is about 5, and I'm trying to get it up so I can house black kuhlis. PH up liquid did literally nothing, and the guy at my lfs advised me not to get crushed coral, for the sake of the neons.

My tap water has a very high pH, and I hope that water changes will raise the pH. I feel the need to get a fish today or tommorow. Should I get neons first, and wait to get kuhlis when the ph goes up? Or can I get the kuhlis now? Thanks for the input.

i would probably get the neons first. but whatever you get drip them first if you can't change the PH.

after floating the bag, open the bag and start pouring some of your tank water in the bag SLOWLY so they get used to the water. if you just dump them in(Depending on the PH of the LFS water) it will shock them, maybe even kill them.

If you do regular water changes, the tank water should be pretty close to that of the tap unless you have a truck load of peat/driftwood in there. If you havent got those elements in the tank, then wait till it raises a bit first.

Why is the pH so low?

I think you need to work that out and correct the problem before you add any fish. If you set the tank up and have the pH going up and down like a yoyo while you try and get it right, you are going to loose fish for sure :nilly:

Yes doing water changes with high pH water will raise the pH of the tank, but if you have something in there leaching acidic tannins into the water it will just crash again. Each rollercoater ride stresses out the fish.

Get your pH stable, then add the fish :)

Cheers

Ian

Are you sure that you don't have anything decaying in the tank. I wouldn't add anything until the pH is above 6.2. If you like driftwood, you should get fake driftwood that doesn't lower your pH.

It's a better idea to get the tank parameters to ideal levels before adding livestock.

:iagree:

Better to get your water stable before adding more fish.

You may be throwing good money down the drain when your fish die quickly or worse, suffer a lingering disease.

Believe me, I have thrown a lot of money down the toilet by not listening to my own rant.

It sucks when your fish die.... and you have to throw it in the toilet.:naughty:
