I have another tread in this section, but I have a similar question, and I'm not positive that it would fit into that tread...:nilly:

I'm wondering if I could do a male only sunfish community in my 50 gallon, the species I'm wanting to put in there are dollar, blue spotted, orange spotted, and banded. The tank will be heavily planted with native plants, and treated oak wood with a play sand substrate will be the only other parts of the aquascape. I have not gotten any filters on it yet, so suggestions would be awesome!

I'm not sure about the orange spotted sunfish because they do get alittle bigger than the other sunfish, would it be okay if I mixed them in?

How many could fit in my tank? I use to nanos, so I'm not sure how stocking works for large tanks...

Also, what could I feed them, my plan is to train them on pellets and feed live food every other day.

I wouldn't worry to much about the Orangespotted sunfish. They compare in size to Bluespotted and dollar sunfish. I would worry about the Dollar sunfish as they can be extremely aggressive. Also maybe the banded sunfish getting picked on as they are the smallest. I would say 4 to 6 fish would be fine, as long as there are plenty of hiding places. They should be fairly easy to train to take pellets.

Orange spotted and dollars may kill blue spotted and banded sunfish.
