Hey y'all! I was thinking about replacing my hang-on-the-back filters with a canister filter. Do y'all have any recommendations for brands and types, and should I actually do it? What are the pros and cons that y'all have had with them? I know nothing about them, other than they need a huge cabinet to store and they are also pricey.

As I've mentioned in other threads...I have a small budget. I guess I could go for anything for under $100.

Not many quality canisters that I know of for under $100. I’d stick with the hob.
I’ve found canisters to be really efficient, but you have to stay on top of aeration with them as they aren’t great at providing surface agitation the way a hob does. Also, if you don’t stay on top of filter maintenance (like me) they wind up producing more crap then they filter out.

Ok, then I probably won't do one. I was just considering the idea cause I've been thinking about doing a 3D background for my tank (I've seen some cool ones, specifically by YouTuber Tazawa Tanks), and I thought If I did a 3D background, the HOBs would get in the way.

I agree, I consider cans a waste of money, compared to their actual benefit.
Unless they have changed radically since I had them, they were/are not user friendly to clean, so are often left for long periods where they become become nitrate factories.
