I just bought an Ugly Stick. It is 4'8" long and is Ultra Lite action. I don't fish that often but want a pole that is fairly versatile. In my area (southern Utah) we have primarily blue gill, sunfish, bass, and other similar sized fish. After doing some research (of course after i buy the rod) i think it might better to get a longer/heavier rod. The reel doesn't matter to me because I am not very experienced and probably wouldn't notice the difference. Should I return it and get a different rod or will this be satisfactory?

That really depends on what you want to do with it. I like longer rods for more leverage for jigging around obstacles and such. If you're just going to be fishing hook and bober you don't need much of a pole.

I would go with a longer one but it all depends on what you prefer and what your using it for

the reel is gonna be more important than the rod. that little rod will be just fine for bluegills/sunnies and will catch some bass for you as well (not preferable but I've caught 6-7lb bass on ultralights in the past). If you just want one all around rod for the fish you listed I would return the ultralight, get you a 6' or 6'6 medium action ugly stick and get a shimano sienno 2500 reel. only 30 bucks on the reel so really cheap but it will hold up for the price. rock some 8-10lb mono and you will catch all those fish without an issue

forgot to say, if you stick with the ultra light 4'8 get you a 1000 sized sienna. same price same quality

I returned it. I instead bought a 6 ft medium action action with whatever reel cam with the combo. Only cast a handful of times before I did something wrong and the line got all jacked up on the spool. After 15 minutes trying to untangle I managed to end up with 3 lines coming out of the spool. I got frustrated and gave up for the day. Caught nothing. Time for new line and a beautiful day. I want to catch some thing super badly haha

Probably a stren reel. Dont get too mad or disappointed. It takes some time to get used to using a spinning reel
