i have been thinking about a electric catfish my LFS has one for a great price it is 2 inches long. what are the ups and downs of them i know they shock but how bad and that some people think there ugly.

what do they eat
water conditions
and normal price for one in the usa just to make sure i have a good deal
and your personal thoughts on them even if you havent had one tell me what you think

Ive kept an electric catfish in the past and hes been at the shop i work for around 18months now as a shop pet. I got him around 2yrs ago at around 2.5" hes now 9-10". with the max size that these fish can attain he would be bigger now (which out in some lakes in africa weve had people claim they are 5feet.) but with him being at work he doesnt get fed as much as he would if he were a pet fish.

I wouldnt worry about water parametres as they arent fussed although they do prefer a higher KH and PH around 7.6-7.8 i suppose would be ideal. As for diet when young sinking pellets and frozen foods such as mysis and bloodworm as good and when larger bigger sinking pellets, dead fish and sea food like prawns and mussle.

hope this helps :)

I HAD ONE FOR THREE YEARS IT GOT 12" ROUGHLY I THINK THEY LOOK COOL. THE DOWN SIDE IS IT WILL KILL OFF TANK MATES ONCE THEY ATTAIN THERE MAX SIZE WICH IS DEF MORE THAN 9-10",ABOUT 24", THEY HAVE THE HIGHEST DISCHARGE OF ANY ELECTRIC FISH SOMWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 1000 VOLTS,OR ENOUGH TO STOP YOUR HEART FROM BEATING!

which type discharges that much the one i am looking at is 10 dollers and 2 inches i am ok with a little shock but stoping your heart i thought electric eels are the strongest at 600 volts. me being in my teen years a heart stopper isnt what i want. i now all the precautions but heart stopper kidding i hope. wait on animal plantet this guy caught a 24 inch electric catfish in the amozon and he used a metal net and he isnt dead

Ive been shocked by both an electric cat and eel

The cat got me the other week whilst i was cleaning him out, firts time in 2yrs though so not bad, i felt it but it was nothing bad really, i did scream or anything lol

we got 22" electric eel in at work and one day i had to go into his tank to get out a pipe and he sent off waves/pulses of energy, i could feel it but they use that as a warning before they send out an actual shock so i knew to take my hands out

i wouldnt have thought that there shock would be mega deadly, unless you are very young or have heart problems or a pacemaker and if thats the case just be responsible.

they cost twenty here at 2" i love mine they ccan be very personable he eats out of my hand ive had him for 5 years now just watch out for his tank mates i dont know bout every one elses mine grows slow as all get out
