So I'm going to be buying a crested gecko or maybe 2. I have a 20 gallon high from a previous lizard but I was wondering if a new home would be better. I've seen the habitats they sell in petsmart with the front that opens. what do you think?
There really is no benefit to getting a new habitat other then looks. The only way you may benefit the lizards is if you get a larger habitat. But the 20gal long should be fine. I am not totally sure on the space requirements for crested geckos.
An adult crested gecko requires 20g. Its recommended when buying juveniles which you'll most likely get is to keep them in a large kritter keeper till they reach 7-8 grams. This allows them to be able to find food in their enclosure easier. I recommend once they reach 8 grams separating them to prevent any premature breeding which can be detrimental towards the female. At this point you can move them up to 10g's standing on their side so the width becomes the height. This gives them the height they require but not getting a large tank. Depending which sexes yours ends up being you can put a male and a female together under the conditions that the female is over a year old and atleast 35g. If you get stuck with two males they can't be housed together. If your lucky and get a MalexFemale or FemalexFemale you can house them in a 30g long for life, required you stand on its side were the width become the height. Personally after mine out grew her kritter keeper I saw an ad for an Exo Terra tank reletively cheap. I don't regret it at all, the front doors come in handy so often. But, as she out grows it I'll upgrade her to my 20g high.
