Gathering supplies to setup a 300gal rubbermaid pond and wondering if I should go ahead and get one of the pumps with the UV filter built in or do I really need it? This one seems pretty good and got a bunch of good reviews.... http://www.amazon.com/LIFEGARD-AQUA...?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1300323450&sr=1-14

If not im planning on just building one out of a milk crate with a sub pump in the middle surrounded by lava rocks and pool filter material.

I don't know about the quality of that filter but normally the average fish keeper does not need a uv sterilizer. It really depends on what kinda fish you have or if you are trying to fight of some thing in the water. A uv sterilizer will destroy all Bactria and parasites in the water. Bottom line is its not a necessary item in my opinion.

The UV will help with alge as well, very good idea for pond. I have personally found that UV sterilizer enhance the water clarity in in my tanks. That looks like a nice pond filter. I would check the price for replacement bulbs when choosing your UV. The bulbs are often rated for 6 months-1 yr of use and can be expensive. Make sure the pump matches the GPH rating on the UV/filter. If you send water through the UV to fast it will be less effective. good luck w your pond.
