I've got a 6ft tank which is 100 gallon'ish and wondering wether to do a piranah set up?
Always been facinated by the things and read that the Red Bellies are maybe easiest to keep? Also how many in my tank?
Sorry if I sound ignorant but ive always wondered about how you go about with putting your hand in the tank for some reason or another, like moving rocks or logs about?

Sorry for being such a noob in advance :screwy:

depend on the footprint of the tank and what type of P you are talking about. I would ask a guy named "ballinoutofcontrol" He really knows his stuff when it comes to P's.

To be honest ive just started reading up on the Red Bellied Piranah, not familia at all about the others at the moment

The tank measures 6ft x 18 inch x 18 inch... So not a massive volume of water for a 6ft tank really

pft, don't ask me, i get everything from jp80911, diogenes and bruner247 with a side of foster, zander and whoever else i'm missing

Red bellies are often recommended because they're the most readily available and cheapest but if you can handle one, you can handle them all.

How do we do maintenance on our tank? You can put a divider in but i think most of us just chase them onto one side of the tank and just keep an eye on them.

72 x 18? I'd probably go with 6 myself at that size tank

On a side note, other type of piranhas seem to be more available in the UK then here in the U.S. UK members are always showin off their collection

For a 100 gal you could do something like 5 red Bellied piranha going by the 1 RBP per 20 gallons rule. As for tank maintenance you will find that Piranha are actually a very skittish fish and not the killers they are made out to be. When you put your hand in the tank they will most likely be on the other side of the tank. I have only heard of a few people being bit by their P's. One of which was a sanchezi Piranha(Maxes out at about 6") which took a chunk out of the guys knuckle and he did bleed but he was fine after all had stopped. The second was a large rhom(Can reach 16"+ max size) who's victim actually had to get stitches but is ok now and by far the worst I have heard of. Post up any more questions if you have any more.

Ah yeah the divider sounds simple enough!
The tank that got me thinking was in a LFS with 3 big P's in, kinda dark and gloomy looking if you know what i mean, looked really natural and authentic with the dark lights... Is that kinda there natural habitat?

Yeah, pretty much. Dark gloomy poor visibility water. That's not what most home aquarium tank look like though. Check out the piranha photo lounge to see what some of the members here are doing.

don't be so modest, I know a lot about several different fish, but nothing really about P's

I am still thinking about them myself. I am moving my puffers to thier new "river tank" in my bedroom and so the 90 will be empty. I just have so many ideas about what to put in there!
