I am just getting into the hobby and my new 75 gal. has brown trim and brown on the striplight cover, should I paint the trim, cover and back of tank black? If so which paint would be best?
The reason for possibly painting is that I got an AWESOME deal on a Sedona black stand.
I've done exactly that and it was a pain in the butt but worth it in the end. I used a spray paint for plastic, it may have been rustoleum. Make sure not to put a second coat on damp paint as it will bubble and make you wish you never started. seal the top of your tank off well so you don't have to end up taking a razor to scrap off all the paint inside. You'll also need to tape off the glass as well. Make sure every crack is taped shut since the spray paint will find any hole to get in. The same paint works for the plastic hood. I had a hell of a time with the trim on the aquarium but that was because I put a second coat on damp paint and it bubbled, then I had to sand, reapply after not waiting not long enough....over and over... They also sell a primer that you can use if you want. It's not necessary if painting the plastic right away but will be useful if you sand. I think this is what saved my sanity in the end so maybe get that right away. The primer is white, so make sure your black paint covers ALL of it or you will be touching up and that's when the trouble begins again....
Oh yeah, and definately paint the back of the tank too. It's soooo much better than the tape on back grounds. I used acrylic water based paint for this - just some extra artist paint I had laying around. I was told that I could peel it later if I got sick of it. This will take a couple of coats. Any black tubing, intake tubes, etc. blend into the background.
