I have the opportunity to pick up a beatiful 5" channa gachua.
My research shows that they are a dwarf species with a max size around 8 inches.
I am looking to see if anyone has experiance with their aggression levels. I have never owned a snakehead before, the SH would be in the tank listed below in my signature.

Thoughts if this is a mistake or a good pick up. The LFS has channa gachua in both regular and albino variaties and a tank full of redlines which I know well enough to steer clear of.

BTW I am not in the USA.

Thanks in advance

I would get a channa gachua. They're not uber aggresive and do well with tankmates of similar size. BTW from something new i found out today. Those 'albino' gachua's your LFS is selling prolly aren't gachuas. Apparently all albino snakeheads are Channa Striata. SO GET THAT!!!

My Gachuas are not agressive against other species, but can play a bit rough with eachother. I don't know how he/she would like your larger agrofish. Mine twwo got beaten up by my Cichlasoma Citrinellum that was half their size untill i moved him.

the biggest knock is they're escape artists and apparently salt kills em.

now i've just mainly seen them in species tanks, but if he's compatible with your tankmates, grab the gachua.

i'm waiting for a couple old goldfish to drop dead before i can start a gachua or bleheri tank.

My Gachuas goes with 1 ropefish, 1 P. lapradei, 5 h. multispinosa, 2 gibbiceps and a few Ancistrus sp.

Thanks for the responses. It appears that later today I will become a first time SH owner.

Interesting the comment on the albino gachua/striata. In looking at them they appeared very similar in body shape to the regular gachua. All were in the 4 to 5 inch range. If indeed the albino's are striata's is there any sure way of visually seeing this, fin count, etc.

Thanks again

Oh btw what fish is that in your avatar Burbotman? you got a larger pic

The fish in may avatar is lota lota the Burbot, a freshwater member of the cod family.
We catch them through the ice up here. Largest I have caught was a 16 1/2 lb specimen that was 41 inches long.

The one in the avatar is about an 8 lb fish that my wife caught on an 14 inch herring.(we were after monster pike). The herring was lodged in the throught of the burbot and we pulled the fish up with out it really being hooked.

Gachua is an awesome fish. They can get aggressive when breeding.
They can grow up to over 11"

Lets get this straight salt will not kill them.. that hearsay..

I found on the net that the difference between gachua and striata would be the pelvic fins-striata will have them/gachua will not.

I will post pics tomorrow of my new addition-Even if the albino is a striata I think I will stick with the smaller gachua in light of it's tankmates.
