Hello, I'm thinking about picking up one of these two flowerhorns. Do either one of them have potential to be a beauty? They're $20 and about 2 and a half inches long. Would you buy one, and which one? Thanksss
Rather than taking a chance with younger fish, I've learned to save up and purchase a fish that is already showing the traits I'm looking for. Those fish would not be considered AAA quality even if they show giant head and beautiful colors just because they do not have a perfect flowerline.
I've seen some young masterpieces being sold for as little as $60 not including shipping. If you are serious into flowerhorn, save up for one that is already showing well. I was a flowerhorn judge for the event we had back in the FHUSA days.
The fish will be going into a community tank with other cichlids so being expensive is kind of not ideal. the fish also doesn't have to be perfect. Anyone know what kind of flowerhorn it is? Thanks guys!

Yup. It's a red dragon. Reminds me of one of my very first flowerhorns. He actually turned out pretty impressive. Bright colors and a really big kok. For $20 I don't think you can go wrong. Especially since you aren't looking for a masterpiece for $100 plus. I would pick the one on the right. Looks like it has more kok potential. More promising to me. The one on the left... IMO looks like it could be a female, while the one on the right looks like it could be a male. But it's just speculation on my part.
Check it out. This shows that a low quality fh at that size... Can actually turn out very nice (even maybe a champion) in the end. There are a few other instances where the ugly duckling turns into a swan if you search on YouTube.
Color enhancing pellets will do wonders for Flowerhorns. Either of those fish can turn out really beautiful. Both fish already have some red showing so by feeding color enhancing pellets, they can easily turn super red when they grow up. It is best to buy from a breeder that has stable lines so you have an idea of the phenotype.
Simon makes a good point about the flowerline. But I don't think it will be a competition fish. As long as you like it... Go for it! $20 is not bad. I think the box stores like petsmart sell fh hybrids for more? Like he said they can still turn out pretty nice!
