i know a place that is crawling with mud turtle, and i was wondering if i put one in my pond would i have to do anything special for it. like shelter, food and stuff. also could it hold its own during the winter time in my pond?

is the pond a suitable environment for a turtle? If there are other established life forms in the pond that the turtle can feed on, I do not see why not.

How big is the pond? How deep? How many gallons? What are the current inhabitants?

If they are native turtles, and your pond is deep enough (or you keep it agitated enough) not to freeze completely, then possibly it could survive the winter. A better option would be for you to keep a tank, tub, or temporary pond inside the house where you could overwinter the turtles, just to be sure that they could survive the winter.

Depending on the species of turtles, they will likely need different conditions to be able to overwinter/hibernate in NJ.

we tried to have a turtle in our pond, two times....

they would just leave after a few weeks.

then, this spring, a turtle just moved itself right in.

then left after 3 months.

this might not help you with your question but might give you an idea for what's in store.

the pond is prob too small and they expend the food supply after a bit. stock it with guppies once the water hits 70 degrees or so. and throw in rosy reds monthly. food keeps them around if they dont have to work too hard for it. good luck
