Hi,

I had a wounded fish with an infection. Post found here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=215568

Hes been in a hospital tank for 2 weeks. I treated 5 days with Maracyn, then 5 more days with Maracyn and Maracyn 2. All the main wounds healed. There is 2 spots where theres still some injury, but the one by the head wasnt there initially, so I am thinking its a heater burn. I used up the 10 days allowed for Maracyn, hes been without meds for 3-4 days with just clean water. I did some water changes yesterday too. I dont know what I can do right now, dont know if I could treat again with maracyn or put him back in the main tank and see if the remaining wounds heal.

Could someone let me know if the wound by the head is a heater burn or not? Also should I still leave him in the QT tank or put him in the main tank? Thanks

1st pic is a white spot on one side
two following pics are the wound that I am wondering if its a heater burn or something else

wonder why he has burns oh wait does he have a decent private shelter?

Is it burns though? I know he doesnt have a good shelter. I threw in some plastic plants but they get knocked around. But if it is burns, what dp I have to do to heal it, and is he fine to go in the main tank?

Its an acrylic 12 gallon tank. I dont really have extra caves an things for QT tank. But is it a burn? Cause If it is, I'd like to treat it. If the fish was burned it wasnt my intention. I have even put my fingers on these type of heaters and you can leave it for several minutes and it doesnt even burn, only slightly warm. And only on the bottom 3 inches or so is where the heat is, the top half no heat comes from it.

So I havad no idea that the fish wouldget burned. Ive had plecos that hang by the heater and they never get burned. But is it a burn, thats the question.

I would keep him in the hospital tank for another week or so. It does not look like it needs more antibiotics. I do not see any infection signs. But you may look into some melafix and or pimafix. One of those has tea tree oil in it and that heals up wounds faster. i would also keep some salt in there for a while to help develope a better slime coat on the wound. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Also move that heater up close to the top, maybe by the filter flow. And you can use alot of things for a cave. Like a ceramic coffee mug, flower pot , drinking glass that is actually glass, pretty much any glass that will sink he will hide in. Fish's skin is not like ours it will burn alot easier, basically if it feels warm to you it could burn a scaleless fish.

Thanks for all the info. Earlier I had thought to raise the heater so that the fish couldnt hide in it. I dont know why I didnt do something like this before. I guess I never thought the fish could get burned.

I was thinking about adding a little salt like 2 teaspoons only. I dont know how well these catfish react to salt. I have used salt with them before temporarily, but always at half strength.

Starting tomorrow I will add some salt.

Jaguar Cats are hardy. Just keep the water clean and melafix does help a lot

I think you should just put in a tube for it to hide so that it's more comfortable since they are nocturnal afterall

keep it in there until the wounds heal completely, then you don't have to worry about re-infection if another fish picks at it if not healed completely
