Has anyone put their cichla in an outside pond for growout in the summer?
Like to hear pros and cons please.

I'm doing it right now, with 2 of my azuls and my Mono pair and there doing good, if you feed them like crazy, your going to start seeing them grow the first week or two, they grow so fast in ponds.

you should monitor the temp of the water at night just to be safe. or throw a mono in the pond to see if it survives?

if you have it heated i say go for it ken !!!!! Or just to see the differance in growth and in the interest of being safe put half of them..also i mean heated so it won't go below the low 70's

:iagree: I would pay attention to the temperature like everyone else said..

I've been thinking about trying this with cheap ocells/monos just to see if it works... I would start out with cheap tropical fish and monitor the temps during different times of the day (like everyone else has already stated). Also, if it may get too hot (like in phoenix) the pond having aerators, being deep, and being in the shade most of the day will help with keeping the pond cool (somewhat).

Thanks for the comments. The temp is my concern as well. I've already tested it last summer with two hybrids. They did fine till they jumped out.
I feel if I put them in a more natural environment (algae, sunlight, plants, .....) it would be much better for them growth and color wise.
My pond currently is stocked with cichlids, masheers, sun cats, pang cats, channel cat, koi and goldfish.
The pond is now netted to prevent jump outs, bird attacks, and critter attacks.
I'm still trying to validate if there are any confirmed benefits.

i wish i was in a warm weather place the whole year like san diego, I would already have a big pond with a bunch of cichla in it. I would say you bass will grow quicker and enjoy the vast space they would have, but i cant confirm anything

How big are the brokos? Can I throw my 7 inch cichla in there with them if you would allow that? I have one wild mono, one 2 spot ocell, one oddball, and one guyana ocell. I need them to grow really fast to catch up to my 14 inchers...and I have a lot of orinos that need to move to the 80...:naughty:
