I have a 180 gallon with a nice stand and canopy. My dad liked the idea of putting the tank in the wall. There is a good spot for it and behind the wall is an old storage room with a drain and hook ups for a sink. I was thinking about putting a slop sink in for quick and easy water changes. The question is, should I go in-wall or keep in on the stand and canopy.

Putting it behind the wall will give me more room in my basement and make it easier to plumb. The downside I guess is I have never done it before and I'm making sure its not harder than I think. I also like the idea of the concrete floor with a drain in case it overflows somehow.

Determine if the wall is a load bearing wall and take the proper precautions. A qualified framer should at least be consulted.

Dont forget, in-wall means all maintenance and feeding will have to be done from behind...unless you do a 60/40 or 80/20 split. I've sen those and they are equally impressive.

If it is in a basement I would doubt the wall is load bearing.

The construction aspect of the build won't be hard. My dad does dry wall repairs and paints houses for a living. He is also extremely good at staining things so the trim will match the rest of the basement and the tank will look like a big picture. The wall is not load bearing, we actually built it a few years ago when my dad finished the basement. My uncle is a carpenter so he can help if need be. Just for reference does anybody have a link to a thread of someone putting there tank in wall. I couldn't find one.

I would do in wall. If you have a sink and water hookups in the storage room, then make a drip system. Once setup you'll rarely need to do a water change (2-3 times a year, mainly for gravel and decor cleaning).

In wall is easy. If it is not load bearing, cut a hole frame around it and then put trim around the outside. Done...

agreed

Go In wall I love mine, you wont be sorry. With a drip system, and a front feeding tube installed; I almost never go to the back.
