I have a female betta in a 10g with water filled up to 6 inches, and there is a heater and an ornament. The tank is getting the smell of rotten eggs...one I am all too familiar with. I think it's because waste has accumulated on the bottom, so should I dump out all the water and fill the tank with new water?
I would like to breed and raise bettas sometime soon...next long weekend I guess, when I have time.

I would take out the ornament and replace it with plants. Take the Betta out and take the tank to the tub. rinse all items a few times with hot and cold water. Refill with water dechlor and you will be fine. You could add a few snails to keep all the uneaten food to a minimum.....

Why only 6" of water?

What type of filtration do you have?

Why are you letting waste accumulate until the tank smells of rotten eggs?

It is a Betta tank, It does not need to be filtered. Maybe he tried brine shrimp and the Betta ate nothing, it went unnoticed and a few days later, poo poo.....lol

Bigspizz, bettas should be treated like any other fish. Just because they seem to tolerate deteriorating water quality doesn't mean we should treat them that way at all. I don't think I will agree with how bettas are being treated that way.

Nabbig, get a sponge filter or make one for this purpose if you don't want any more problems with your fish or water quality.

I believe in creating a condition that is close to its natural habitat. Betta's come from stagnate static puddles.....No filter, air stone, snails, and a plant is what I do....The water does need to be changed, the smaller the tank the more you will have to change. every other day works for me. Betta's HATE current......

It never occurred to me sponge filters make currents. I seriously doubt they make currents that would sideswipe the fish. I still stick firmly to what I believe is best for a betta.;)

Your Betta's love you for it too! If I paid like 50$ for a decent Betta I would step it up a bit. :)
