Got an 8-9 inch johanni a few days ago and he will snarf down night crawlers but since I dont know how much nutrition they have i'd like him to get on pellets. Been trying hikari floating cihclid and floating carnivore pellets. He will put the carnivore pellets in his mouth and taste them but then spits em out. This is the first day i havent fed him. Should i starve him a few days to see if he will start swallowing pellets?

keep trying, Johanna's are usually pretty good at accepting pellets. use the starving method for about 2-3 days, then put the pellets back in....keep at it.

If he is already "tasting" them then you are half way there! Starve him and dont give in....

From what my husband said, our pike started eating pellets a few minutes after this was posted, lol.

He now hangs out with our arowana and the only pellets either of them will eat are hikari food sticks.

Nutty fish :screwy:

They don't all work that well. Wish it did. I have a Female Trom that won't look at anything other than feeders. I have starved her for 21 days trying to change this behavior.
Won't even look unless swimming with eyes and a tail.:irked:
Best to try and starve them for a while, my Johanna learned to take anything thrown in.

Well, we don't put anything live in there anyway because our arowana, clown knife, shadow bass and longear sunfish all eat pellets or frozen foods. So he won't be able to decide he only wants live food or anything like that.

I think he decided he wanted pellets after he buddied up with our arow and saw him eating them. Now if you drop pellets in they'll both rush over together and start eating. Him and the arow swim back and forth together all day, it's kind of surprising.

I know my pike has to let the pellet get softer when younger and that could be one thing I did it in a months time but I had the pike since 1.0".
