There's a 8-10" pike at my lfs that is beat up, but is on sale and is only 20$! I don't know what species it is, but am debating if I should get it because the price is amazing! It's a orange-yellow color now, but I'm sure it's due to stress.
If you didn't know what it would turn out like, would you get it?

Also, if I get a pic on Tuesday, can you help me with an ID?

Thanks in advance!

I would tank it....althought I would put him in a quarentine tank first, just so his fins can heal.

I kind of want to keep it in a 55 for life(3 years, until I go to college) because it looks full grown. However, I have a 180 with other cichlids that I could put him in with, or when my ponds are done, I can put him in there.

I'd also want to put in some smaller species of earth-eaters in the 55, but if they won't work with the pike, then I won't get them.

Exactly what I was thinking of doing... :)

It all depends on the species of pike. If it is a Saxatilis species go for it. If it a Lugubris species I would not, for they can and will exceed 12 inches in length and a 55 would not give them enough room to comfortably turn around.
As for as Geos, they should be alright as long as it is some of the larger species. Most of the time
Pikes only are aggro towards similar shaped fish, but I have seen and heard of them not tolerating
any tankmates at all.

Thanks for the info. When I looked at it, my first thought was saxatillis.

So you think he'll be cool in the 55?

Yes, the largest will barely reach 12" inches and most grow to about 8-10".
