I have a very nicely colored female Johanna and I happened across a male of almost her exact size (8-9") should I try the pairing? Am I just asking for 1 or more dead pikes? It is not the end of the world if the answer is no as I will just continue to enjoy the pretty single girl.

There is always the possibility you may luck out. I think that at that size, the chances are probably slim. I think you will have two fighting pikes.

You could get a divider and try it out. I'd make sure the divider is VERY sturdy though, put some rocks/suction cups on both sides to help stabilize it. Give them a few days to get accustomed to each other, then remove the divider. There will be some scuffling, but if they are close to the same size, they should eventually even out and come to a standstill. If the fighting is to intense, divide them again and try again in a week or so. Don't give up hope.

Generally though, at those sizes, it would be best to get either two or more males, and let her choose. It is risky though with multiple males as there will be more aggression. Its your call. Personally I'd try it because pikes look best as pairs...;)
