Yes, shrimps are better. Red cherry shrimps are great! If you want snails, try assassin snails, nerite snails or mystery snails. Only 1-2 nerites or mystery though if you want either of both. Be sure you have enough algae supply if you want nerites. They eat algae and biofilm 24/7 so be sure the tank is also well established. Mystery snails on the other hand will eat anything you provide them.
As for assassin snails, they will eat commercial foods but generally prefer MTS, bladder snails and ramshorns as their food. They are expensive at $4-8 each. If you want them and money is no object, start with 2-4 instead of just one. They don't proliferate as much as the bladder snails though.
