Can I keep a single, lone synspilum in a 75 gallon aquarium? I've liked synspilum for a while so I decided to grow one out. I've had it for a while now and it has grown pretty good from about 1 inch to 4 inches in the last couple months. Well, today I came across an adult syn for sale. He was perfect. The exact fish I'm looking for. The coloring and shape are just what I was hoping mine would grow into. So, I'm very tempted to pick it up. I'd hate to pass up the exact fish I've been wanting in hopes that mine will grow into that eventually. The only thing is that, right now all I have for him would be 75 but, like I said, it would be all his. So, what do you think?

I'm just afraid that a 75 might be too small for the syn even though he would be by himself. Then again they only get a little larger than an Oscar and you can keep one of those guys in a 75.

I think you'll be fine for quite a while. 75 gallon is a really nice footprint. A lot of CAs (minus a couple) seem to really slow down in growth when they hit about 12"... I don't think I've really seen syns bigger than that anyway.

BTW, synspilus has apparently been changed to melanurus! Just a heads up. :)

Yeah, I read something about melanurus the other day and it threw me off. I didn't know what they were talking about until I looked it up.

I've seen melanurus easily hit the 16" mark, but, as stated, this will take quite awhile.

To answer your original question, if you want to use the 75 as a growout for a year and a half or so, it will be fine, but a full-grown male melanurus is probably going to need a 24" deep tank.
