shouldnt you be able to hold the same ammount of fish in a 75gal as you can in a 90gal?

(L x W x H) right?

because 75gal deminsions = (48" x 18" x 21")
and 90gal deminsions = (48" x 18" x 24")

and i heard that the hight does not matter when considering the amount of fish you can keep, mainly the lenght and width. the 90 is also the same length and width as the 75, just 3 inches taller. not a verry big difference, so y do people say you can keep noticeably more fish in a 90?

theres two school of thought.
if you max out your bioload producing nitrates at a high rate, the extra volume will help to dilute.

however if its generally about a size issue of the fish to move around, length and width are more important.

so does your fish need the swimming room or do you just need the extra volume to slow nitrate accumulation?

Smart people aren't saying you can put a lot more fish in a 90 over a 75. If you have a small community tank you might be able to add a few extras with the extra volume to handle the bio load. but in terms of Max Length of the fish, it would pretty much be the same for the 2 since they have the same footprint

totally depends on the type and/or amount of fish you want to keep. some fish like the larger cichlids will need a large footprint (for territory) but something like angels height must be taken into consideration first then footprint (with common sense applied obviously).
some fish require a combination of height and footprint such as datnoids as they are long and tall fish.
