I recently bought a 2" shovelnose sturgeon and he seems to be doing ok he eats plenty of blackworms his water quality is excelent I have plenty of water movement for good oygenation of the water and his water temp ranges between 75 and 78 degrees depending on the time of day, however I wonder if anyone knows why he swims so funny? He does flips n barrel rolls and when hes at the top of the tank he swims upside down. The only time he swims normal is when hes at the bottom. I have read as much as I can find about this fish before purchasing him however I do not remember seeing any info on this. Does anybody know?

Wish I could help but can you get anymore? I would like a few shipped if you could.

They are extremely strange believe me. They noramly do that in a small tank, the barrel rools and flips, but even in a large tank the annoying swimming does not stop, but it isn't as bad!! The only time they stop is to gobble up some food then its back to on the move. 2'' is aweful small. never seen such a small sturgeon.

Yea hes the tiniest one ive heard of anyone having hes in a ten gallon right now due to his small size im worried he wont find food in a bigger tank. So I guess its normal for them to swim all wierd huh? Does that stop with age?

Crisroom- I would get you a few but the store I got mine from only picked up two in a trade at a show he went to and one of his got eaten and I bought the other one but if he gets more ill let you know. He was charging $25 a peice for them...

cool, at least these sturgeon are capable of living in a large tank. the MN record caught is only like 5 some pounds. ive caught bass bigger. anyway, good luck, ive heard the water conditions have to be pristine. a LFS by me also got one in, but it died before i got to see it.

I've kept them, aeration is important temps in the mid 70's or lower are best and they like to eat live black worms and live daphnia. Where did you get yours? I would really like to a couple of them:drool: Mine never swam funny so I really don't know why your does. I've been told they will swim with their nose out of the water because they have been feed floating pellets and are looking for food. Mine died when the tank opened up it's side at night and i didn't know it until the next day:cry:

lower the temperature they're cold water species

Scaphirhynchus platorynchus is not restricted to cold water, they can and do live quite well at temps in the 70's. stagnate water will not be tolerated, so aeration should be as high as reasonable. Water parameters should be relatively good, no ammonia and low nitrates, neutral pH, moderately hard water.

Due to the fact I cant seem to get the tank any cooler ive played around with a powerhead in my tank to find the best setting for him that didnt blow him around the tank and gave him enuf aeration to not breathe hard and seem to have the setting he likes by actually taking the powerhead out and lowering the water level 4" so the filter roughs up the water. I got mine at a tiny lfs in racine specialising in exotics called aquatic oddities. It worries me that yours never swam funny you seem to have the most experience with these guys on the boards. I wonder if it is caused by some kind of brain damage from lack of proper oxygen early on in life (I hope not) I know the shop I got him at had him in 81 degree water with almost no water movement at all. Im sorry to hear about your loss they are amazing fish and I would hate to lose mine especialy the way you lost yours :(
