Hello,

I have been contemplating a sturgeon for a while for my 75 gallon.

I have found that shovelnose sturgeons often stay under 18". Still too big for a 75 but I hear they grow fairly slowly.

Is this sturgeon a freshwater or brackish fish?

Thanks!

I have found that during on my internship, most shovelnose sturgeons are over 20" and that is NOT rare. This species are 100% freshwater. The problem is that it's nearly impossible to obtain a young shovelnose sturgeon legally.

In a nationwide effort to protect declining populations of the federally endangered pallid sturgeon, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) ruled in early October 2010 that shovelnose sturgeon must be treated as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of their similarity in appearance to the pallid sturgeon.

add to what is mentioned above - sturgeons are COLD water fish. we're talking low 60's, can you provide a cold water tank for 50-125 years?

I would also say there more likely to hit 20" plus, just saw some down in florida around 24"-36". These may not be the species you are referring too but i think there pretty close. uploadfromtaptalk1368199419063.jpguploadfromtaptalk1368199480056.jpguploadfromtaptalk1368199509245.jpg
You will be ok for a while with a 75 gal but id recommend a 400-500gal like these are in.

Not true! Shovelnose sturgeon are warmwater species, not COLD water fish. They can easily handle warm temperatures and I captured the shovelnose sturgeons in 80's in the water and unlike most sturgeons, they don't live longer...only 12-15 years and may make to 30 tops. Do a proper research, my grasshopper.
