found through missisipi and misourri rivers from montana to louisiana and pensylvania to new mexico. ideal temp: 70 to 75 F. biggest state record was 39.5" so with that i would go with a pond that is 4X16X4 or bigger
I kept these fish for quite some time in a 4' W x 10' L x 3' H concrete raceway with a sand substrate and moderate water flow. In the 5 years I worked with them (before transfer to a public aquarium) none of the original fry raised reached over 16 inches. Wild sampling in Wisconsin resulted in the largest fish being around 26 inches. They are very active fish and require a good varied diet. They feed almost constantly and for good health you need to give this to them. They can easily range in temps from the low 40's F to the mid 70's F. They stress out above 80F. These fish IMHO, are the perfect Sturgeon for the home aquarium but are very demanding in regards to water quality and feeding so not recommended unless you are really willing to give them the time and space they need.
These fish are Aquacultured and are available if you look hard enough. (Should you really want one you will find them) Capture from the wild is unnecessary and not advised. Wild populations are in decline and they should not be taken as long as captive fish are available.
