In my opinion tropheus (Lake Tanganyika) and mbuna's (Lake Malawi) have very similar behavior patterns and dietary requirements and they don't seem to mind each other at all. One tropheus duboisi has lived with my mbuna's for over 3 years and a colony of Orange Flame Bemba's have coexisted with the malawi's for over a year just fine.
With that said, I'm not sure if what I've observed is a universal outcome.
this is my mixed malawi tank check out my profile for more pics of the gang the tank is now full of rocks i added them all the way to the top and made a wavemaker
My WIP malawi tank, with armatus and an assortment of others. They're small enough ATM to go between the rocks as territory, I'm slowly swapping the decor in favor of things like the driftwood in the back left (ornament) and caves in the middle. I only have river rock though, which is terrible at stacking, but here it is;;;
