Show those podunk avocado sprouts!

Everybody does it. Open the avocado, leave the pit on the knife and the next morning, you think, "Why not?". So you stick it full of toothpicks, put it in the top of a glass of water and watch it turn moldy and get flies on it.

Except I just had one live! I didn't do the redneck toothpick thing. I sprouted it in a bag like any other seed and *pow*, roots and a sprout. Anybody else got avo?

Interesting,how long did it take for the plant to sprout and get to that size?

My fiance just did the toothpick thing with 2 avocado pits. I'd also like to know how long it took from putting it in the bag to sprouting...

Stick 3 toothpics in an avocado pit, so that you can suspend one end of it in a cup of water, with just the bottom of the pit touching the water.

Well, ideally the avocado pit will sprout a root and some leaves, and then you can plant it and grow an avocado tree! But usually they just sit there and rot and mold and attract flies...

mine didnt sprout so i threw it out lol. next time my mom makes guacamole ill have to save the pit.

I don't know who started the toothpick thing. It has never worked. Maybe once in hundreds of my mom's misguided efforts. Just put the pit in an almost-closed baggie with a wet paper towel and wait about a week. Once the white root is out, plant it. Keep it hot and humid. I expect mine to die here in WA.
