I used to keep piranha, when I lived in a state where the law tolleated it. One thing, mine loved shrimp pellets. They would take that tough little pellet by one end, and it would look like a log going into a saw mill. anybody else have fish of such nature, or was that unusual?

what do you mean by shrimp pellet? Mine with take cichild sticks and chomp on them a lil bit but only when they are getting full and half the time they end up spitting it back out and i got a mess to clean up

u got a brand name for these pellets if they differ from cichlid sticks?

The ones I have now are "Top Fin Brand Shrimp Pellets", made for bottom feeding fish. I feed them to my craw fish, but they are the same thing as I used to use. I got them at petsmart. my red bellies would munch the **** out of them. I didn't feed them those initially, though, I realized they liked them by accident, trying to feed the pellets to my other fish (none of which liked them). my piranha were pretty young at the time (bout the size of a half dollar) when they got hooked on the pellets, but ate them until I got rid of them (they were about the size of my hand, or 6-7") because I was moving to FL. probably a lot harder to get an adolescent or adult on them.

they are sinking pellets, very hard, made to get soft over time for grazing bottom feeders. you gotta drop them one at a time. my red bellys would take one by the end (and look like they had a cigar in their mouth) and let their teeth do the work. a quarter inch pellet would be gone in about 10 seconds (maybe less, been a while).

cool i'm not a fan of the sinking pellets thou they are harder to cleanup if not ate at least the floating ones float (lol) i tried a sniking pellet and once it hit the bottom they wanted nothing to do with it at all. mine will also eat the hell out of krill

yeah, mine (and like I said, they got onto those at a young age) loved them. I'd drop one in, and a RBP would catch it before it hit the bottom. If it did sink, it was wasted.

just wondering if anyone else had RBPs that munched on the pellets.

if your's will eat krill, awesome. the main thing is to get them used to eating something other than live fish (if you're trying to keep them with other species, anyway).

most piranhas will eat just about anything, but alot of serious piranha keepers feed pellets as the main part of their diet

cheaper and healthier...

Mine wouldn't eat hot dogs. or a pinky mouse my roommate bought.

they did completely devour a 7 inch channel cat I caught. nothing but skull and spine. poor thing lasted maybe a week.

i feed mainly pellets, but i just had to run to the grocery store yesterday to load up on fresh fish food, picked up 2 pounds of shrimp, a pound of smelt, and an 8 ounce whole dressed catfish... the catfish will be going into my mixed shoal tank in about 20 minutes
