So, I have a 10 gallon sitting around not doing anything, and I want to make it a really nice planted shrimp tank. My problem is what water to use. I just ordered an RO/DI filter, but I know that soft water is harmful for cherry shrimp because it makes it hard for them to malt. I'm pretty sure my tank water has some chlorine and I don't really like using prime. I have an established 65 gallon, and I'm thinking about using about half "used" water from that tank and half "new" RO/DI water so that the water would be hard enough for the shrimp to survive. Is that a good idea? Also, will the pH be acceptable for the shrimp to thrive? Thanks for the help guys.

thats the way i want to do my shrimp colony skim water off the top of the established and also use the new filter on the old tank for at least a day

Gotta test the PH when you do this. It is gonna be altered from your tap. And who knows what PH the shrimp were raised/lived in. Maybe you can just keep a bucket of aged water to do waterchanges? The shrimp like their hardness and PH neutral and slightly high.

I would say depends on the type of shrimp you want to keep what they would like best... Cherries / Crystals / sulawesi shrmp all have very different needs..

So probably best to decide what type you want to keep and then research their needs and go from there?
