i plan on shutting down a tank since most of my fish are gone from it so ill put the remaining few in another tank. i know ill be starting it back in a month or so. so im wondering should i just keep the water in the tank or empty it out and refill it when i plan to get the tank up and running again? obviously there wont be anything running on the tank.

I would just shut it down. The water is not really a big deal. Its your BB in your filters that you want to try and save so you have a nice start on your next tank. So I would just move the filters in to the other tank, and get the old one cleaned up.

When you get your new tank, just add water and let it set for around 24 hours or just add the water treatment and then add your filters, then just start slowing adding fish back in the new tank, while keeping a eye on your water quality and and all the good stuff.

I would empty the tank and move the filters or media to another aquarium just in case you have to quarantine any fish you can do so without much hassel.

If you are moving the filters off it then drain it.
For just a month Id just leave the tank running, even with no fish in an established tank you wont lose all the bb

what they said. just drain it

i should have mentioned the other tank is already established so i dont want to over filter it. also i dont want to keep the tank running to cut down on running stuff that has no use.

you can never "over filter" a tank per say. however there will only be a limited ammount of stuff available to keep them bacteria alive. it cant survive on stuff not there. so that would worry me about possibly killing some off in the tank its added onto temporarily, and causing a mini-cycle once moved back.

IMO, in the interest of not losing an established filter, i would leave the tank running. even if you want to move the other fish in there, spend .10 and buy 2 comets from the LFS to keep in there, and just unplug the heater. you can either return them, or use them as food when the time comes.

Excellent advice!
