I had him for about 2 weeks now. Are they normally shy when first acclimated or are they like puppydogs right from the start? I also havent seen him eat in front of me yet. When he sees me he floats back behind the driftwood.

hmm... gachuas are usually very outgoing and interactive with their keeper... do have other tankmates housed with it? have you tested your water parameters? temperature?

Was it acting this way before you got it?... from previous owner? Was it eating then? :uhoh:

So what does it eat before you got him? try offering fish fries, how big is he?

The other tankmates are a 3 inch texas cichlid, and a almost 3 inch jag cichlid. They leave the channa alone since its much bigger and they quarrel among themselves, the channa is 5 inches. The temp of my water is set to 79 degrees F. The tank is a 50gal. I plan on removing both cichlids later on and giving the channa the 50 all to himself later on.

It's been acting that way since I got it. I have never seen him eat but he's alive, so I'm guessing he's eating while im not looking. When i look at the tank he floats back behind the driftwood everytime, not use to me I guess. Prev. owner said the channa loves bloodworms, fed em to him before, but I havent seen him eat with my own eyes yet.

My water params as of now is amm - 0.25, nitrite - 0.25, nitrate - 0, really weird how my fully cycled ac50 filter looks as if it restarted the cycling process. I had a power outtage and I dont know how many hours it was unpowered before the lights went back on, so I'm thinking maybe that killed the bac. colony in my filter.

Any other suggestions on why this channa is shy?

they are shy for a while. my striatas and gauchuas hated my ass but later on they get used to you ONCE they find out YOU are the SOURCE of FOOD!

juss wait a lil bit and it should be fine.

I have had the same experiance as above. Once my gachua realized what I have to offer, he is the proverbial puppy dog. Took awhile but he now trys to eat from my hand, only problem is his aim sucks and he ends up latching on to my hand instead of the food in my fingers.
