I have a VERY shy green texas. He hides all day and night whether I have the lights on or not and when he is out when he sees me he goes back to hiding. Any tips for that? He's very pretty and I'd like to see him once in a while lol

Give him lots of hiding places. The more the better. Is it alone in the tank? Is it eating? All cichlids like to have hiding spots it makes them fell more comfortable.

sometimes having good dense overhead cover at the top of tank, they will feel security even if you remove objects that are hiding them from your view. then you can see them while they feel somewhat "hidden". I had fish do fine under masses of floating plastic plant leaves, tied firmly in place. If leaves extend down a back wall as well, it's even better. almost feels like a cave to them.

I use fake ones, and most of mine are from crafts stores now because it's SO much cheaper. doesn't really matter what kind, but bigger leaves provide more of a sheltered deal for fish. my female carpintis likes trying to rearrange them, especially evenings. it gives her something to do. kinda cute to watch.

welcome. there's a few threads on forum with pics showing nice fake plant tanks.
