ok so i have 1 male and 1 female in my 55g with a common pleco. the thing is they never swim around or do anything but sit on the bottom. they only come out when i throw some food in there they eat then go back to hiding. i have never had this problem with any fish i have owned in 3yrs. is this a trait of the JD's or do i just have boring ones. the male is about 3-4" and the female is 2-3". when i first put the female in there they would swim non stop up and down the tank all day long. now nothing. the tank is in my living room next to my tv. so it gets medium traffic but not a lot. any suggestions. i will try to post a pic of my tank set up maybe some one can give me some pointers on making it more JD friendly thanks in advance

JDs are lazy SOBs. Mine pretty much only move to eat or beat the crap out of each other. One day I expect them to move to have some babies, but they're doing their best to resist the urge so far!

I wouldn't worry about it. You could add some dithers (giant danios maybe) but I assume you have a pair cuz you want to breed them, so if that's the case the dithers will end up dinner eventually.

i had a JD for a bout a year and 1/2 and for the most part it would just hide behind a log in my tank, and then like your two he would come out only when i put food in there.

ok well as long as i am not alone in this then i guess i will not worry about it. thanks all for the info.

My JDs and EBJDs have always been rather shy until I add dithers, then they seem to find a purpose in life. Giant danios have worked particularly well because they're fast enough to keep from becoming lunch, although other than that they hold no charm for me because they're rather ugly IMO. Still, I'd vote for adding some fast dithers!

my jd used to be like that until i added a texas,gt and a con and he batterd the tex and chase the gt and con. i had 5 tiger barbs as dithers and they didnt get chased at all but when i put a feeding block in when i went on holiday he decided to eat the barbs.
add dithers and another tank mate

the old lfs in my town the lady told me about adding giant danios for dithers but that was before i had my 55g and didnt want to take away from the growth room from the old pair i had. but i have been thinking about getting a couple/few. about how many should i get and do the danios breed easily or no. if they breed then i could get a few and hope for babies so i wouldnt have to buy anymore.

danios are egg scatters so they breed all the time but they eat the eggs, if you want babys you need an empty tank with a net in about 1inch of water so the danios carnt swim down and eat the eggs. you also need to put it in a room which gets natural sunlight but not the tank its self as the usually spawn a dawn.
the eggs will hatch and you will have to feed rofters and baby brine shrimp
get 5 or more:)

so i went and bought 3 giant danios for now and i ended up getting another FM. i have just started to really like these guys. but anyway as soon as i put the danios in the tank my JD's came to life. does anyone know why this is? is it because of the constant movement from the danios that get the JD's attention. i just found it strange.
