I have had my two Oscars for about a month and a half, and they are still scared of me. How can I make them less afraid and get them to swim around more.

if they are in the tank alone put some more fish in.. i dont know how big your tank is but if they see other fish out in the open swimming around they will know its safe and they will swim around too.

Really? I have 2 catfish in with them but they are always hiding.

well catfish normally arent the most active fish anyways.. when i first got my oscars they always hid,, i put a JD and a convict with them and they got much more active...i guess if your around the tank alot they will get used to you faster also....

Alright, I'll see if I can get another fish to get in there.

What sized tank is it? You could put some giant danios or tiger barbs to add movement and act as a dither.

Not sure that's the best solution. You'll end up with ich (unless you quarrantine) or fighting. How big is the tank? You've already got 2 Oscars and 2 'Catfish' (plecs?). The 2 Oscars alone are going to need a 100+ g tank, not to mention the 'catfish'. If they're in a secluded part of the house they're not used to any activity & that may be the problem. Is the light on most the day? Off?

Well, I'm not sure of the actual gallonage. The Oscars are only 4-5 inches and I have one Pleco and one Picus. They are in my room which they see me a lot and my mom too sometimes, my room is the basement so the washing machine is down there. The light is on most of the day, should I keep it off instead? Also, I do not think I will be adding any other long term fish to the tank, I will read around and see what I can find out and you guys can give me advice. I'm doing water change tomorrow and I am vacuming the gravel.

Well just measure it with a tape measure then. Common Plecs do get over a foot long, did you realize that? And Oscars get 12"+. It's quite possible the water quality isn't good and the fish aren't being 'shy' but they're sick. You'll need to test the water for ammonia, nitrites & nitrates. But 1st get a tape measure and measure the tank. I suspect the tank isn't big enough for the fish &/or the water quality isn't as good as it should be.
