does anyone have red devil(s) that just hide all the time under rocks, sometimes even on its side?? my red devil is vicious, but all he does is hide and never comes out. does anyone have any clue about this behavior?? i had to separate him from the other fish due to aggressive behavior, however, he backs down to my red jewel. are red jewels aggressive cichlids?? the red devil killed my jag yesterday, just a little smaller than him.

How long have you had him? My RD will chase anything that comes near him, but then he tries to hide under anything he can fit under. It got to the point that he got stuck a few times and I had to move the decor in such a way that he couldn't fit under it. He still tried anyways, nearly getting himself killed.
ive had him for about 2 months. he is about 1.5" and he is always attacking my other red devil about 1", thats why i had to separate him.
How long has he been seperated? Did you move him to a seperate tank? It's typical for cichlids to be shy when young (you look like a predator) and when changes to their tanks have been made. Sounds like in your situation, it's probably both.
With all my juveniles except one, they've been very shy and mellow until they hit about the 5" or 6" mark, then they start getting the attitude.
My one hid for the first couple of weeks, but once he realized I'm the food source he's there immediately to be fed. Give it some time.

Mine was shy until about 3". Also, now, at 7", he hides and becomes lethargic (except for aggresion) when the nitrates get high. Then I know I should have done a water change a few days ago.
