Shy red tail payara

I can't get my payara to come out in the light! All it does is hide behind wood. Even turn on the black light. Any suggestion ? Probably 6-7 inches long

Usually feeding at night so try a night light. They are more of a schooling fish. If you can get 1-2 more it might help. Still more outgoing to their cousins.

You said it yourself "bigger ones". Some aggressive fish will be much bolder when larger. Give it more time. How big is it?

It's around 6-7 inches long

It's wild caught and not used to its surroundings yet. I'll come around in time. It's just shy like 99% of the other wild caught fish that are caught and moved to an aquarium setting. Be patient.

are there other tankmates? how bout removing the wood or other decorations?

Thanks zeke! And as for tank mates I have a retic stingray. Had a pleco in there but was sucking in payara! Had two red wolves but they died.
