So the worst thing just happened, I went to buy a pleco to help with my small algae problem and I was recommended a Siamese algae eater. Long story short my HBRTG ate the stupid thing and died 2 days later. I'm extremely upset and angry. From what I found is they are toxic to most fish. Just wanted to ask the pros.

Never heard of them being toxic to fish ( but i have no clue)
...did you quarantine his fish first?

Its never recommended to add an animal to a tank to fix a problem (unless its for aggression issues).

Algae is caused by a few things , to much light, and to much organics in the water ( fish waste over feeding or over furtalizing).

Ok ^_^ hopefully an expert on them will chime in. ...sorry for the loss and good luck.

I would go with a large bristle nose pleco if you want something to eat the algae ...depending on what type of algae it is.

2 days later? Maybe cuz the sharp fins it got logged inside it and or constipated. It may have just swallowed it an may not have instantly killed the sae. I'm sure if it chomped it and chewed it up things nay have been different.

I keep half a dozen sae's in my planted, my little striolatus piranha has likely ate one or two and i havent seen ill effects and they are great for algae

I believe I was the person that mentioned SAE. If you really want to add a fish to control algae, it's a better choice than plecos. It's a first time I've heard anything about SAE being toxic. Your arowana eats fish in the wild. Even an adult SAE will be barely a snack for it. Unless it's still small. In any case, it most likely chocked from the SAE or it's fins punctured it's stomach.

In any case, there is no scenario where an arowana is better off swallowing a pleco vs SAE. It's just part of keeping fish. Fish eat fish, some are ok, some dies from eating fish.
