Just got a baby in with feeders. What should I know? Also, are they rare?

Got pics?

Of mine?

The stupid camera isn't working because i mispalaced the charger.:duh:

They are not particularly rare but are not imported to the pet trade all that often.
They are often pond reared for market in parts of Asia.
These fish (Catlocarpio siamensis) have been known to get VERY large, the record is 120" and 660 lbs. though of course most are much smaller. Here are a couple pictures of nice adults from Jean-Francois Helias.

Whatever you do, dont release it into a local waterway. They have gotten into some places around my house and up near the great lakes, and are causing a lot of trouble with the local ecosystems.

Ok... Well 120'' is larger than I expected. :WHOA: How fast do they grow? Into the pond when he's big enough. 18 cents good deal?

Nah.. I don't dump stuff anyway. :grinno:

Great deal,
I can't find anything on the growth rate of the things, all the articles I am finding are focused on the falling #s in the wild do to habitat destruction and overfishing, even the pond culture is not helping because they raise wild caught young until they are a couple feet long then eat or sell them, they are rarely able to get to breeding size, They apparently need to be almost 4 feet long to breed and one that size is a weeks income to a fisherman in the upper Mekong.

That is an awesome find, very cool fish.

I heard that they are very rare and are getting very thinned out in the wild. That's why they are a prize to the sport fisherman to catch because it is not often that you hook one. I have never seen one in the aquarium myself and I have been collecting rare fish for over 20 years.
