So yesterday I did a water change and cleaned 1 of my 2 canisters. This morning both of my 4 inch thinbars were breathing heavy and disoriented. All of my other fish were fine. I have heard they are sensitive when they are young, but not sure what I'm doing wrong. Well one has died this afternoon and the other still looks weak. My nitrates were between 10 and 20. I notice a lot after water changes even my big datnoid breathes heavy and gulps at the surface. Can anyone shed some light on what is going on?

How big is your tank? If your tank is not big enough and you're using a python, the speed of water going into your tank might be too fast for your fish to accommodate. If anything less than a 125g don't have your faucet fully turned on when filling the tank. Add water slower.

Since you are already using active carbon, the crap in the new water should have not been the issue.

Oh, and I would add the water conditioner half dosage before and after filling the water, total of two half dosages equal one full dosage in the end.

breathing hard, how much water did you filled the tank with you should leave at least and 1" gap, I did 100% water change on my baby indo and Ntt and put them in the tank after on hour and they do just fine. idk what happened in your case, did you use prime dechlorinator or amquel? add salt and stress coat?

I have a 125 and I typically do a 40 percent water change. I'm not using any salt or water conditioners. Should I be and if so what? I wasn't using an air pump, but I hooked one up this morning when I saw the one fish upside down. I usually fill the tank to the top but I have plenty of surface movement with the 2 xp3 jets. All of my other fish were fine except the 2 baby thinbars. Are they just super sensitive?

this is how i do my 100% water changes, First I put some of the old water in the 20 gallon container and net out all of my fishes, put in them container also provided with the air bubbles for better circulation, and then just start vacumm the tank and clean your tank and scrub the tank, after everything is done I just filled the tank up with water and add salt, stress coat, and Prime water conditior and then change all of my filter media. Once everything is done plug all of the power filter and and canister heater back in and let it sit and operate the tank for an 1hr and then come back and check the water temperature later if indicator is in the green zone then put all of my datnoid back into the tank, I know this method might not be recommended but hey it worked for me.

NTT are super sensitive. You need to add Prime, the water conditioner, every WC. And your aeration isn't sufficient. You need to add a powerhead with air intake or an air pump.

have you considered getting a ro unit and using the waste water for wc's? i use that method and add prime and havent had any problems at all.
