My albino cory has been swimming around like a normal fish recently. It also regularly goes up to the surface as if for air, but stays there like its trying to jump out of the top of the tank (sort of like sturgeon do). It has also developed red marks that look like blood all over its body, and its skin (or... whatever it is) appears to be peeling off or shedding. It is totally left alone in the tank (in a 10 gallon with 2 black skirt tetras and 8 endlers). It seems to have started since the endlers were added. Before the red marks developed it looked like it was shoaling with the endlers.

I love my cory to bits and any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
James

sounds a little like bacterial infection. i'm not a pro, but my suggestion would be something along the lines of furan-2, with some water changes every other day or so for about a week or longer if required. hopefully someone else will chime in here and offer more help.

I'll jump in here and 3rd the bacterial infection. What are your readings for ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte? If you just added a bunch of fish to the tank, that probably caused a mini cycle and elevated ammonia and/or nitrIte levels (especially in such a small tank). That most likely weakened his immune system and opened the door for the infection.

Personally, I like Mardel products so I'll recommend Maracyn two. As much as I love Melafix and Pimafix for treating cuts, scrapes, & torn fins, neither are true antibiotics. They do help wounds heal more quickly and may help prevent infection, but I wouldn't trust them to treat a full blown infection.

Also, for long term care, cories much prefer being in groups than being alone. When they're alone, the can get really stressed. So I strongly suggest a group of at least 3. However, your tank is already a little overstocked so you shouldn't be adding anything else. So you may want to consider upgrading to a larger tank sometime.

Thanks everyone, I only had myxazin in the cupboard so I've put that in, I'll go to the shop tomorrow to see if there's anything better. Chelle - I got the cory a few years ago when I knew nothing about cory behaviour, as soon as I get my new tank set up (delay due to A level exams) then I'll give him some friends. This is also the reason I got the endlers, I really hate getting anywhere near to overstocking, but they'll be going into a 112 litre ASAP.
