Hi, I was moving my Fire Eel to a new tank last night when he jumped from the bucket onto the carpeted floor (the carpet had some white spirit on because I had been getting rid of some paint spots). He wriggled about on the carpet for a minute whilst I was trying to get him into the net and bucket again and then I got him into the tank.

When he was in there he went into his tube as usual so I assumed he was ok and I stayed up late watching the fish in their new tank and he seemed to be having a good nose around. I wake up this morning and he is out in the open which is unusual for him so I take a closer look and he is looking very pale along his bottom half (belly) and he is swimming around very awkwardly, almost like spasms.

The rest of the fish are fine and I didn't cycle the tank because I bought the sand, decor and Eheim 2080 over from the old tank.

Is there anything I can do for the poor fella? :(

I've had escapes with eels (morays, which are much tougher and hardier) but basically just keep the water conditions good and be patient, it could take some time. I had a SFE that I found on the floor one morning and it took 10 days or so before it even ate.

Thanks, it looked like he was trying to get to the top this morning so I repositioned the spray bar for more agitation and did a water change and he has gone back to his pipe where he normally chills. Fingers crossed!

Here he is in happier times:
