I look for signs if illness in my fish everyday. It looks like his scales may be just starting to stick out a bit. I noticed 3 days ago. I searched for dropsy pics but all of them look much more pineconed and advance. Im not even shure if they are sticking out any more then they normal do. I just want to make shure.

Its a black moor. The tank has only been setup for about 10 days. Its brand new I got it because I had 3 fancy goldfish in a 5g tank. I have added bio spira. Enough for 90g. The tank is a 55g. There is also gravel from the old tank along with some other stuff from the 5g. He is acting fine and is his normal self. I raised the water temp and added Maracyn- Two.

Yesterday I minced up peas. I put loads in. I think if I had added anymore they would have burst(seriously). I noticed about 20mins ago he was going to the bathroom along with the other fish. He has been constapited, usuly I never see him go, and if I do its really thin and white. It was whiteish but seemed much more normal. I havent feed them today. Im going to fast them tommorow too. Should I fast saturday?

Just tested
Nitrite .25
Nitrate 5.0
Ammonia 0 I think its kinda hard to tell with my test kit.

Here are some pics.

it maybe dropsy but if it is its early days treat it as you are for now separate it from the others if you can. but ti may just be that it is getting what is know as a pearlscale effect where the whole scale becomes dome shaped, dropsy just the back edge of the scale raises up. a close up pic from above on white background will help with id on what is wrong

Dose the pearscale effect hapen as a fish grows? I have had him since the end of July, but he was in a 2g for a bit, then a 5g. He has only been in the 55g for a little over a week. Could it be he is growing now?
I will try to get a closeup of him. Tonight.

Tryed getting better pics

it does happen as they grow but looking at it again i would treat it as suspect dropsy. dropsy is an environmental effect usually caused by inappropriate diet, high salt levels, high nitrates. the only real remedy is the solving the cause i would just feed a flake food in small amounts, release underwater to stop bouyancy problems. I would suspect that changing the diet may have caused it. Good luck

I know that"Dropsy" describes the symptoms of more than one kind of disease. He his feeding fine. Even though I did not give him food today I saw him picking around for food. He is active and all over the aquarium. I am going to buy Epsom salts and add them to the water. I also have read that a varied diet is good for fish and can provent dropsy.

He dosent seem to be swelling like the fish in these pictures

I added Epsom salt to the water. 1/8 teaspoon per 5 galonds. So I guess now I just have to wait.

Thanks for the help.

he might be sick, but he lookes fine to me, just a little fat. if hes not clamped he probly isn't feeling ill, but you can still treat it to be sure.

His scales seem closer to his body today. Seems slimmer to. Maby he was just geting fat quickly or something. I have been treating him, Im going to keep adding the Maracyn- Two. I added 1/8 teas spoon of epsom salt per 5 g. How often shoul I be adding that? So far I have only done it once. He was fasted for about 2 days. On the second day my grandma had put a few spirulina wafers in. ( she has a feeding prob.) Should I fast him some more? How long?

Dropsy can indeed be caused by a variety of things, one is an internal bacterial infection (aremonas) antibiotics geared for gram negative bacteria sometimes work, however fancy goldfish have a reputation for getting dietary dropsy from to much fat or ash in the diet, using tropical fish flakes rather than high fiber goldfish foods can be the culprit.

Pearlscales are a bit different, here are line drawings from a goldfish site
