My 10" Arowana (Leichardti) loves to overeat in a mixed community 160g tank. Overall he looks great, swims around (near surface more than usual though) but for a week now he is breathing heavily (w/ gill plate and mouth opening). He also has not eaten in a week (usually has a great appetite of market prawns and smelt) and now looks slightly bloated. Today, he has a slight tear in one of his pectoral fins. When I first noticed the heavy breathing, I changed 60% of the water, added a powerhead (w/ tubing to produce bubbles ) to increase O2. It didn't help, so I added aquarium salt (1 tablespoon to 5G) and increased to temp from 82F to 85F. This all has not helped. The other fishes (bichir, clown loaches) are doing fine. I've had other fished die (Bichirs, Tigrinus, etc ) within the last 2 months that start off breathing heavy, no appetite, then weaken, get bloated and die. The water parameters are all okay. I'm frustrated, just want to save this fish, never overfed again and never buy any more fish!!!

Is it a general infection or parasites or flukes of some sort? Should I treat the whole tank or place the arrowana in a hospital tank.? Please help!!

Hi By the sounds of it,(sorry to say it) but as mentioned you are vastly overfeeding the fish, as you say your previous fish died with the SAME symptoms!!!! they are all suffering bloat, it doesnt look that varied a diet as you only mentioned two??? A fish not eating for a week in theory is not a big deal, but as they are suffering it makes it different.... you should start feeding more veggies but not loads,, and try and vary it as much as possible,,Its a bit like if you fed yourself the same thing once or twice a day for all your life its not very nice?? Fish dont want the same thing either....

I dont think there is anything else you can do that isdifferent to what you are doing now,,as it looks like you have it all covered!!
dont feed them too much though.goodluck

De-shelled peas is a good one for bloat it flushes them out.. Basically your fish need to take a dump and cant!!!

:iagree:

I was reading your other posts and you have been told about the amounts of food you give back in August, but obviously have took no notice!!
You also have mentioned that you Change the filter every 3 months??? i hope that doesnt mean what i think it does,, ( your fish is going through the pain of a cycle every time you do that,,,,
I dont mean any dis-respect but i do think you are trying to keep fish well above your skill level and expierence!!!!!
