What do you guys make of this? Its like his tail end is going to fall off. Any suggestions would help because I have never seen anything like this.

It looks like fin rot which is a bacterial infection. It appears to have already passed the initial stage which isn't good. Check the water parameters and conditions as this is the primary cause of it. You can treat with antibiotic treatments in addition to aquarium salt, but you have to make sure the quality of the water is good.

Is this a new fish or one you've had?

Its a newly captured fish. It has been in the tank for 3 days. I think it may be the water parameters. It is a new tank. I used bio-spira and a filter pad from another tank to get a jump start of the cycle. I did notice that some of the new fish have stringy poo with is usually an indicator of parasites. I have been feeding metronidazole soaked food for a couple of days so I thin that may help but it may be too late for this fish. How much aquarium salt would you add to a 58 gallon native tank?

It might be too late for that individual. If you have others, I would start with 1 tbsp for every 5 gallons. This assists with removing parasites as well as keeping the fish more at ease. Slowly add the salt. Also, you don't want to add salt if you have any inverts or scaleless fish.
I haven't had any problems with live plants with that dosage. If you have no live plants, no inverts, and no scaleless fish, you can probably go up to 2 tbsp per 5 gallons if need be.

Being a brand new tank, I would get Amquel Plus, which will neutralize any ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the tank.

Water changes combined with antibiotics should help.

I am going to treat the entire tank with metronidazole tonight. Tomorrow I need to will get more aquarium salt and slowly start adding that. I'll let you know how it turns out. The one fish looks worse every time I check on him. His tail is almost completely gone now.

I feel like I am off to a really bad start with the native fish. We'll see.

Crash and burn! At least four fish are dead. It is spreading too quickly to control. Last night only two fish had any visible signs. Now, less than 24 hours later, four fish dead and others showing signs. Once all of the fish die I will be cleaning the tank out and going back to cichlids. I have had very good luck with them over the years.

I would like to say thanks for all the help.
